The association was founded in 1994 by Dr Salami. Initially, it was joined with the Physiological Association, but in 1995, the two associations were separated.
After the separation, it was then known as ILUHASA (Ilorin University Human Anatomy Students’ Association).
ILUHASA changed to ASSON (Anatomical Students’ Society of Nigeria) in 2003/2004, and it has since then, been known as ASSON.
In 1995, Dr Joy Edade became the first female ASSON President (and the first Unilorin ASSON President overall), succeeded by Umar Salamatu in 2018.
